William S Haynes Solid Sterling Flute $1999

Lovely early vintage flute by William S. Haynes Company, Boston (1914). Made before the William S. Haynes Company patent was approved / granted. Stamped "Patent APO FOR". Very limited number of flutes were made (rare).

This flute has that silky sweet tone that Ws Haynes is known for, and also has plenty of movement and projection. It has not been sitting unused. The prior owner has taken very good care of this flute, and it shows.

This is a lighter flute, not one of the very heavy flutes made during this era. It is no more than a US mid wall, and the head joint is a thin wall, about .012 or .013. This allows the flutist much more control over the notes (think of plumbing). The head joint remains a nice sharp cut after all of these years, and could be used with a different flute. This flute feels very comfortable in your hands.

The pads seal well and the keys have a very nice feel to them (my fingers sink in slightly). They do need slightly more pressure than I would prefer however this is nothing out of the ordinary. The keys are tight enough but could be a bit tighter for the perfectionist. It is playable as is (good pads / good seal / good action / nice pretty tone / all notes play).

There are many interesting items to consider about this flute. Many items are patterned after the L. Lots, Labrets and other very early flute makers (the Fathers of flute) using the Boehm system.

1. The time period when it was made (can you think of a modern day flute that would hold up and still be very playable after 100 yrs of use)?
2. Wall thickness during this period was mostly very heavy wall flutes especially for the "Commercial" flutes. This is a mid wall, with a think wall .012 - .013 head joint for a nice back pressure system design.
3. This flute has the very unique tear drop C key made in Louis Lot style
4. An elongated A flat / G sharp key
5. Lot Style roller bars on the C foot
6. M charism is welded right to the body (very sturdy) 6. Ball shaped area for the screw / adjustment pins also common in the vintage L. Lots, Lebrets, etc.
7. Stampings "Patent APO FOR" made before William S. Haynes patent was approved.

Condition
Overall, excellent fopr a playable solid silver commercial Haynes flute (perhaps exceptional given its age). No dings dents or damage. All 3 pieces are straight. No evidence of past body repair such as welding. Minor scratches.

The keys could be a bit tighter to make it just perfect. I have seen many vintage Haynes flutes and this one is really nice for the price. Does not come with tenon cover or original case.

How it plays
This flute plays with a gorgeous full clear tone from low to high. The solid sterling silver (head joint body and foot joint). add much warmth and color to the tone. The C foot joint helps brighten the tone making the high notes pop much easier, while making it easy on the hands back and neck. The added feature of 12kt gold springs allow for a very fast softer touch, with very quiet even keys.

Condition: Pre Owned Mint

There are no dents or dings. Very light scratches which do not show in pictures, as can be expected from any pre owned flute. The pads are very clean and show almost no use. The flute is in ready to play condition. I have yet to come across one like this in this high quality of condition.

Has been very lightly played, and plays very well
All 3 pieces are in alignment as are keys. Nice soft even key action.

Flute has very light surface scatches on underside (surface scratches).

If you look really (really) closely, there is a very slight mark on lip plate outer edge RHS that I cannot capture in a photo. This is not close or near the emboucure or area where player would feel or rest lip, again located on the outer edge.

This Wm. S. Haynes solid silver, commercial model flute, crafted in Boston in 1929, is exceptionally beautiful. It looks near new -- and that is not an exaggeration.

It has been gently played, perfectly maintained and, obviously, serviced regularly and well. Its pads show minimal wear and will last many years.

It has had all the adjustments needed to play perfectly. The head cork was replaced with a Seldman Head Stopper Plug with outstanding results.

The case, while not original, is in new condition as is the Haynes leather case cover.

This is one of the best looking and playing Sterling vintage Haynes I have played. It would make any player very happy.

This is a fantastic true professional grade flute by Sankyo flutes. It plays with ease from low to high, and has a very lovely tone, with ample volume and projection. It is comfortable in your hands, and is very high quality. The hand finishing work on the Sankyo brand flutes is outstanding.

This flute was made just prior to Sankyo ending its relationship with Prima. While this is called a Silver Sonic P.A. (Pointed Arms), the tooling and workmanship is the same as a new CF301. The price new on this flute is $5480 with the features offered on this flute.

The keys and mechanisms on this flute are on par with the highest grade and cost flutes money can buy. Sankyo puts the same amount of effort and workmanship into their lower cost flutes as they do their highest costs flutes. The keys remain fluid, fast, even and quiet. They are soft to the touch and feel wonderful to your hands and fingertips.

Sankyo is also known for fabulous intonation. Many professional flutists choose the Sankyo brand, for its durability and scale. They may of course, customize the flute with their own head joint however, the Sankyo flute from grade 201 base level to the highest grade custom flute is fantastic.
